The Grand Procession at the Powwow in Eagle Butte,

South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

More of the Grand Procession...a bit out of focus...

Yes, that does appear to be a CD

in the middle of the feathers in the next to last dancer.

A young woman in a blue jingle dress.

Day-glo regalia...

One of the many drums and singers at the powwow

This was on May 24, 2003.

I loved this headdress.

David Beautiful Bald Eagle's flag

at his house on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

David's son and one of his friends

from Athens, Texas getting ready for the powwow on May 25th.

The Chief's house not far from Howes, South Dakota.

The Chief was in the 82nd Airborne and landed in Sainte Mere-Englise.

Another day at the powwow in Eagle Butte.

That's Chief David in the cowboy hat. People often ask him about when he took Marilyn Monroe out dancing while they were filming "River of No Return."

Karen Sussman is the President

of the Society For The Preservation of Wild Burros and Mustangs. She helps manage a ranch for wild mustangs and burros on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. I was there for a blessing ceremony for her new house and for the group's efforts. That's Karen without the hat.

More of the crowd at the traditional lunch served after the Blessing ceremony.

Seated at Karen's table are Chief Arvol Looking Horse, Louie Freiberg, the Moccasins and myself.

According to Karen, this group of horses

(by way of DNA testing) were part of a herd which can be traced back to the original horses brought from Spain in 1640 by Father Kino. They are from the Gila River area of Arizona.

This is one of the Gila River herd.

Karen's group is trying to keep these animals from being sold individually to slaughter houses.

Arvol Looking Horse performed the blessing ceremony.

He is flanked by his wife and myself. He is the 19th Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe.
