I am enroute to my own "close encounter" with Devil's Tower.

OK, I know that is pretty corny, but I couldn't help myself.

A bit of trivia, I used to do interviews on the radio in Texas in the mid 1970s. One of my guests was Dr. J. Allen Hynek. He is the person who created the phrase "Close encounter of the third kind." I interviewed him a year before the movie was made.

My first view of the tower while driving up Highway 24.

The sun has not quite come up, yet.

A part of the prairie dog colony near the east side of the tower.

A kiosk at the Visitor's Center.

A sign on the kiosk

...also on the kiosk...

...from the west side...

Some of the prayer bundles on a tree near the tower.

From the south side

...note the broken pillar near the bottom.

A closeup of one of the pillars that has broken off, but has not fallen off.

These pieces of wood, and the rope,

were used for the first recorded successful ascent to the summit on July 4, 1893.

From the south east side

...each pillar looked to be from 5 to 15 feet wide.

A closeup of where some pillars fell off.

From the north side...
