Fort Union to Old Fort Peck

Click on the smaller pictures to see a larger version of it.

Fort Union is literally just a few feet inside of North Dakota.

It was first built in 1828.

All of the buildings are re-creations.

The fort is along the Missouri River, a mile or so from Fort Buford.

Looking out the main gates to the Missouri River.

The river once came up to within about 100 feet of the fort. The river's modern lower level leaves it several hundred feet away.

Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana.

More of "Big Sky Country" on the Fort Peck Reservation.

A fuzzy photo of the Fort Peck Dam complex.

This road is along the top of the dam.

The road is over 3.5 miles long. This is the longest embankment dam in the world. The lake's shoreline is longer than California's.

Another view of the dam's power plant, and the Missouri River.
