Start of the mid July 2002 Newsletter

I want to share some good news with all of you.

I have been very busy for the last ten days, or so. Because of that, I have yet to respond to any of the e-mails I have received about the July newsletter. I should be able to get to those e-mails in the next day or two. I have been working on some last minute changes to my book, and my daughter's wedding.

Yesterday (July 10th) was a very exciting day for me. For the first time, I noticed that my book's publisher was listing my book on their website. I checked through a few of their pages and they listed their online retailers. Low and behold, there was my book listed on Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobel and many other websites.

Up to this point, I was trying to stay very low key about the book. I have often said I would believe it was really happening when I had two copies in my hands. That is, one for me, and one for my parents. I have been like a child waiting for Christmas. I will be happy with anything, for it IS the thought that counts. However, I can hope for something very special. Seeing my book on Amazon.com made it real to me.

The book is not scheduled to come out until October 8th. I am sure that date could move in either direction if something comes up. They (my publisher) are still making some last minute changes.

The listed title is:
"This Day in North American Indian History: Events in the History of North America's Native Peoples"

Every book which is commercially published is given a number called the International Standard Book Number. For my book it is
ISBN: 0306811707

The book's listed price is $35.00. Most of the online dealers have it listed in the mid twenties ($24.50 to $27.00).

Amazon.com, and the other online book sellers, is taking orders for when the book does come out. You can order a copy through my website.
http://americanindian.net/book.html or

However, I suggest waiting a bit. I am going to see if I can work out a better deal for my newsletter's subscribers. I'll let you know when I have figured this out.

The other good news is that my oldest daughter, Heidi, was married on July 3rd here in San Diego. Heidi and her husband Darreld live in Michigan. Most of their friends and family live here. So, they decided it would be easier for the important people in their lives to be able to attend if they came here.

Heidi wanted to get married on Mount Soledad. It is a hill near the coast which overlooks a large part of San Diego. Heidi liked it because of the view. The view also makes it a tourist destination. The problem is that there is very little parking, and it is first come, first served. I married my late-wife Robyn at Torrey Pines State Park. It is just a few miles up the coast from Mount Soledad. We were married on a small platform on one of the cliffs over the ocean. However, the park has some other places with some views of the city, a lagoon and the ocean. Heidi liked the idea, so I set it up for her.

They flew in a few days in advance to handle all of the last minute details. They had to drop off some decorations for the reception before they came to the park. Unfortunately, they decided to drive through La Jolla (part of San Diego) to get to Torrey Pines. On a good day, La Jolla is busy around noon. The day before a major holiday, the traffic was terrible. They were an hour late in getting to the park. This was OK because they were traveling together. It was just the guests who had to wait.

Being the mostly politically-correct person that I am (preferring "American Indian" over "native American" is the major exception), I seldom talk about people's appearances. But, in this case, I will. Heidi was exceptionally beautiful. Her husband Darreld is a nice looking guy, too.

You can see some of the pictures from the wedding on my website at:

Thanks for listening to me share my excitment.
