Congressional Representative Bob Filner
On June 2, 2005, Congressional Representative Bob Filner came by to introduce us
to two San Diego students who are going to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Melanie Doliente (San Diego Academy) and Anthony Ibarra (Linda Vista High)
will be enroute to Annapolis this summer. Congrats, Plebes!
Representative Filner was an educator, a former member of the San Diego board of
Education, a pianist and has a Ph.D. He was elected to Congress in 1992.
On January 25th, 2005, Representative Filner returned to KUSI to discuss some of the issues of the day.

Bob had a laugh at his own expense.

Representative Filner was very concerned about the new medication program being offered to the lowest
income people who had been getting Medicaid. He wants this part of the new drug program to be repealed
or delayed. He said the law was written to benefit the large drug companies, and not the public. He
feared for the safety of many people who would not be able to get their needed medication due to lots
of snafus in the system.

When asked about his opinion of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, Representative Filner was not
very positive. He feels that Judge Alito has a very 'right-wing' philosophy. He considers him to be a
threat to such issues as the right to choose and privacy issues.
