_*TWIN BACKGROUND*_

    * First TWIN event was held in 1980 and honored 56 women

    * Number of women honored by TWIN since 1980 is 2,480

    * Amount raised since 1980 is $1.9 million

    * TWIN is an event that recognizes the extraordinary contributions

of women who are in management and leadership roles in their

      business and profession.

    * The luncheon spotlights women who are honored by their firm's

      executives, co-workers, families and friends.

    * Employers receive special recognition for their leadership role in

providing advancement opportunities for women in the workplace.

    * The YWCA was a pioneer in meeting the needs of working women. In

1908, the YWCA established the first employment bureau in San

Diego. The service was free to both employers and job seekers. By

the late 1920s, 250 women were placed in jobs each month.

    * At that time, the YWCA offered more than just a list of employment

openings-it also provided job counseling, vocational training

classes, and sometimes even business clothing.

    * The YWCA opened its first emergency shelter in the country for

      battered women in 1978.

    * Every year over 500 women and children experiencing domestic

violence receive shelter, food, clothing, counseling and support

      in rebuilding their lives.

    * The YWCA provides over half of the beds available to victims of

      domestic violence in San Diego.

    * The YWCA has plans to renovate its entire 83-year old building.

Due to the current economic climate, they are moving forward with

the first phase of this vision now: renovating the historic

swimming pool and gymnasium. The YWCA has already raised 80% of

the funds needed to achieve this objective and with additional

support from the community, they will realize this goal.

    * Over a third of all YWCA revenue comes from individuals and

      foundations.

    * 70% of all adults served by the YWCA programs obtain employment

      and permanent housing.

    * The YWCA has always adapted its programs to meet the changing

needs of the community, especially women. The TWIN Awards Luncheon

is an important tradition that is held in other YWCA's across the

country and we are committed to continuing our role in recognizing

the contributions of women in our community.
